| Port of San Diego |
San Diego is a coastal city in the southwestern corner of California, close to
the border with Mexico. Its superb coastline with near-perfect climate makes it
quintessential Southern California beach city. Home of the famous SeaWorld San
Diego and San Diego Zoo.
Metropolitan handles stevedore operations for the
Port of San Diego's Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. Our continued
diversification and expansion of break bulk material handling operations
yielded yet another commodity, cement, to our ever-growing forte. Although
there are numerous manners to discharge cement, the operation in San Diego is
very unique. Cement is discharged via a rail mounted mobile unit that is
specially developed for the cement industry. This mobile unit called a
"Siwertell" offers unique methodologies by utilizing a screw or auger method to
discharge cement.
In doing so, an advantage is recognized over other more commonly used
technologies that generally utilize a vacuum type system to discharge cement.
The Siwertell is capable of handling a wide range of ship sizes, while
providing for environmentally friendly discharge operations. Another additional
advantage that the Siwertell has is that its components are well proven within
the cement industry.
At Metropolitan and in the United States, world cement importation continues to
increase and displays little signs of its growth trend subsiding.
