No other cargo handler has worked harder to improve pallet-handling of fruit
than Metropolitan. From our patented single cage invention in 1968 to today’s
huge 8-pallet cage lifted by modern mobile cranes, Metropolitan has led the
field in designing pallet-handling innovations.
Our expertise extends from ship to shore as we have also pioneered the use of
cold storage facilities on the West Coast for handling imported fruit destined
for west coast stores from South America. We designed and handled the first
on-dock storage warehouse for both pre-fumigated and non-fumigated fruit.
Warehouses are pre-stowed from electronically processed manifests and high-tech
bar code scanners mounted on our forklifts, which then scan the pallets for
distribution and inventory information, speeding this delicate cargo to its
proper destination.
Metropolitan initiated the stevedoring of imported frozen meat and now provides
stevedore and terminal services for exported California citrus and indigenous
fruit, as well as imported South American bananas. From Port Hueneme to San
Diego, if it crosses the water, chances are we have handled it in our usual
delicate, excellent manner.
