Metropolitan Stevedore Company has a long history handling automobiles. Before
the modern RO/RO ramps of today’s PCTC’s (Pure Car/Truck Carriers), Metro
employed the “old fashioned” lift-on, lift-off method of discharge and loading.
From the original “Beetle” to the now forgotten name of “Datsun”, Metro was an
early adapter.
Today, Metro employs large gangs of drivers and lashers to drive-off new cars
from modern car carriers employed in ocean going services from the Far East to
the West Coast and beyond. Today, we might be asked to conduct concurrent
discharge and loading operations for several shippers. Multiple supervisory
personnel are assigned to these more complex operations. Experienced
superintendents and skilled organization is critical during yard congestion
periods to simultaneously balance the discharge and loading requirements.
Autos, trucks, boats, yachts, trailers, modular homes, and other rolling stock
arrive from all parts of country for export, while new cars roll off the ship
into U.S. showrooms.
Highly valuable automobiles routinely get the excellent Metropolitan care that
is a must for today’s shippers.
